Pope Leo has recently addressed the controversy surrounding his comments on US President Donald Trump, emphasizing that his statements were not intended as a direct confrontation regarding the conflict in Iran and his appeals for peace.

During a press briefing aboard a flight to Angola on Saturday, the pontiff, originally from the United States, clarified that his words were misinterpreted and criticized the media for amplifying the dispute through excessive analysis and conjecture.

“There has been a narrative circulating that doesn’t fully capture the truth… much of the coverage has been speculative, layering interpretation upon interpretation,” the Pope explained. He highlighted that his recent speech in Cameroon, where he condemned leaders who allocate vast sums to warfare and depicted the world as “devastated by a few despots,” was not aimed specifically at President Trump.

“Nonetheless, it was perceived as if I were engaging in a debate with the president, which is far from my intention,” he added.

Historical Tensions and Calls for Peace

Pope Leo has previously voiced criticism of Trump’s policies, including the administration’s large-scale deportations and the president’s characterization of Europe as “declining.” However, the escalating conflict in the Middle East has intensified their strained relationship. The Pope urged all parties involved to “halt the cycle of violence” and condemned Trump’s threat to obliterate Iranian civilization as “unacceptable.”

He further remarked that divine favor does not extend to those who perpetuate war, countering US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s call for Americans to pray “in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Political Reactions and Media Dynamics

In response, Trump labeled the Pope as “ineffective on crime and disastrous in foreign affairs,” expressing his disapproval of a pontiff who openly criticizes the US President.

Meanwhile, US Vice President J.D. Vance, who has also been critical of the Pope in the past, expressed support for Leo’s recent clarifications. “I appreciate Pope Leo’s statement,” Vance posted on X on Sunday. “Although the media often stokes conflict-and genuine disagreements do occur-the situation is frequently more nuanced than portrayed.”
