Challenges in Cope’s Internal Democratic Processes Since Its Inception

Since its establishment in December 2008, the Congress of the People (Cope) has consistently grappled with issues surrounding its internal democratic mechanisms. These challenges have persisted, casting doubt on the party’s ability to conduct transparent and effective leadership elections.

Upcoming Elective Congress: Uncertainty and Organizational Hurdles

Despite widespread speculation that Cope might delay its elective congress once again, acting secretary general Erick Mohlapamaswi has confirmed that the event is slated for April 25-26, 2026. However, concerns remain as the party has yet to inform delegates about the congress venue, branch representation, or transportation logistics.

Insiders within Cope’s senior ranks have revealed to The Citizen that financial constraints could jeopardize the congress’s execution. Although the party officially denies any funding shortages, the lack of clear arrangements has fueled doubts about the event’s feasibility.

“Grassroots members are eager to rejuvenate the party and see this congress as a fresh start, but current disorganization might prevent it from happening,” an anonymous source shared.

The last elective congress took place in 2019, resulting in Mosiuoa Lekota’s re-election as party president.

Preparations and Commitment to Democratic Integrity

On April 16, 2026, Mohlapamaswi issued a statement affirming that the elective conference remains on track. He highlighted that the Congress National Committee (CNC) has conducted multiple meetings to evaluate the readiness of provincial branches to hold their own congresses.

“The progress varies across provinces; some are advancing steadily, while others lag behind. Cope is dedicated to organizing credible, well-structured, and democratically legitimate congresses that genuinely reflect the will of ordinary members,” Mohlapamaswi emphasized.

He further stressed the importance of adherence to the Party Constitution and the need to inspire confidence not only within the party but also among the wider electorate. Recognizing the nationwide decline in public trust toward political parties, Cope aims to set a standard through transparent and disciplined internal processes.

With only days remaining before the congress, Mohlapamaswi reiterated to The Citizen that the CNC, as the party’s highest decision-making body, will soon review final provincial reports to confirm the congress’s execution.

Membership Numbers and Growth Prospects

When questioned about the current number of active members, Mohlapamaswi declined to provide specific figures. Nevertheless, he indicated that the party is experiencing renewed interest and growth, partly inspired by the enduring legacy of Mosiuoa Lekota.

“In recent weeks, we have witnessed a surge of South Africans joining or rejoining Cope,” he stated. “Many are motivated by heartfelt tributes and acknowledgments of President Lekota’s pivotal leadership during a critical period. His role in founding Cope was a vital intervention in South Africa’s democratic evolution.”

He added that former members are returning, and new supporters are bolstering the party’s ranks, signaling a potential revival.

Assessing Cope’s Current Political Relevance

Mohlapamaswi maintains that Cope remains a significant player in South Africa’s political arena. He points to ongoing national challenges that align with the issues Cope originally sought to address.

“Cope’s relevance has arguably increased given the persistent problems facing the country: deteriorating service delivery, entrenched corruption within the ruling party, soaring crime rates, rampant unemployment-especially among youth-porous borders facilitating undocumented migration, and sluggish economic growth,” he explained.

These enduring issues underscore Cope’s continued mission to offer an alternative voice and advocate for meaningful change.
