Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated an extensive search operation targeting a group of armed individuals involved in a recent cash-in-transit heist in Kranskop. One of the suspects was discovered deceased inside an abandoned vehicle shortly after the crime.
According to Robert Netshiunda, the provincial police spokesperson, the deceased suspect sustained fatal injuries while reportedly handling explosives during the Monday robbery.
“The body was located inside a deserted vehicle on a gravel path near the Tugela River, en route to Nkandla, on Tuesday,” Netshiunda confirmed.
Investigations revealed that the robbers made off with an undisclosed sum of money and forcibly took firearms from three security personnel present at the scene.
In addition, the suspects commandeered four vehicles, which were then used as escape transports during the getaway.
During the incident, the assailants discharged firearms in the direction of a nearby police station; fortunately, no injuries were reported among law enforcement officers or civilians.
Netshiunda emphasized that the group involved was sizable, with police efforts now focused on tracking down at least a dozen suspects believed to be connected to the crime.
“We are actively pursuing a manhunt for the remaining individuals, estimated to number 12 or more,” he stated.
Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending those still at large.
