During the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder proceedings, the prosecution has challenged Bongani Ntanzi’s allegations of police mistreatment. Ntanzi, identified as the second accused in the case, insists that following his arrest in June 2020, he endured severe torture and was suffocated before being coerced into signing confession statements.
The trial, currently underway at the Pretoria High Court, involves five individuals charged with the 2014 killing of Senzo Meyiwa.
Ntanzi claims that his torture included being smothered with a plastic bag, a tactic he says forced him to endorse documents he did not fully understand. Contrarily, the prosecution relies on vehicle tracking records to dispute his account, asserting that the data contradicts his version of events.
State Prosecutor George Baloyi confronted Ntanzi, stating, “We contend that the incident you describe near the stairwell is a fabrication.”
Despite this, Ntanzi remains steadfast in his testimony. He presented vehicle movement logs to the court, arguing, “This evidence disproves claims made by Sergeant Mogane, who denied our visit to the garage and seeing Jonathan. Without this data, I would have been dismissed as dishonest.”
Furthermore, Ntanzi disputes the prosecution’s assertion that a vehicle was stationary near an Alberton garage due to mechanical failure, insisting that the entire duration was spent while he was being tortured.
He is scheduled to continue his testimony on Tuesday morning.
