Herman Mashaba Launches Bold Initiative to Revitalize Hillbrow

Over the weekend, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba brought his #OperationFixJoburg campaign directly to the heart of Hillbrow, pledging a comprehensive transformation of the area’s housing conditions and economic prospects.

Speaking to residents in Ward 59 on Saturday, the former Johannesburg mayor presented a strategic plan aimed at reversing the rapid deterioration of the inner city. His approach prioritizes restoring law and order, creating employment opportunities for locals, and spearheading an extensive property renewal program.

Revitalizing Abandoned Properties: The Inner-City Renewal Strategy

A key element of Mashaba’s vision is the Inner-City Renewal Strategy, which involves reclaiming over 600 buildings currently neglected or controlled by criminal syndicates.

“My objective is to recover more than 600 hijacked, deserted, and dilapidated buildings and collaborate with private investors to breathe new life into them,” Mashaba affirmed.

The plan focuses on converting these neglected structures into affordable housing options for local families and students, turning urban blight into vibrant living spaces.

Community Voices and Social Challenges

During his visit, residents expressed deep concerns about limited economic advancement and the evolving social dynamics within their communities. Mashaba acknowledged a rising frustration among locals who feel alienated in their own neighborhoods.

He remarked on the growing sentiment that many residents now feel like outsiders in areas they once called home.

Addressing Crime and Immigration: A Controversial Stance

Mashaba did not hesitate to confront sensitive issues, attributing much of the city’s decline to escalating crime rates and the impact of illegal immigration.

“Crime has entrenched itself, and illegal immigrants are contributing to the breakdown of law and order,” he stated. “The inner city no longer represents the place of opportunity and peace it once was.”

Political Ambitions and the Road Ahead

The #OperationFixJoburg campaign signals Mashaba’s clear intention to reclaim Johannesburg’s mayoral seat. Branding himself as a leader with “unfinished business,” he urged voters to think critically about their future when casting their ballots.

“Empty slogans and hollow promises have run their course,” he declared, emphasizing his commitment to attracting investment, restoring dignity, enforcing law and order, and generating employment.

“A vote for ActionSA means a vote for a better future where every resident’s life trajectory improves.”

Electoral Landscape: A Fierce Battle for Johannesburg

As political tensions escalate in Johannesburg, Mashaba’s focus on Hillbrow represents a strategic effort to win over voters most affected by the city’s infrastructure and housing crises.

Johannesburg is anticipated to be one of the most hotly contested metropolitan areas in the upcoming November elections. Mashaba faces formidable opposition from DA mayoral candidate Helen Zille, who has also been actively campaigning and spotlighting the city’s service delivery shortcomings. Additionally, the Patriotic Alliance’s Kenny Kunene is vying for influence.

Other major parties, including the ANC, EFF, MK Party, and IFP, have yet to announce their candidates. All contenders will need to address persistent community grievances such as water shortages, deteriorating roads, and unreliable electricity supply.
