UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is set to recommence next weekend, with all four South African teams still actively competing for coveted playoff berths.
While the primary objective remains securing a spot in the Top 8, the upcoming fixtures also represent a critical window for emerging players to stake their claim for Springbok selection. With the international season looming, these matches could be decisive for fringe players aiming to catch the selectors’ attention.
Below, we explore five promising uncapped talents who are making significant strides and could bolster their Springbok prospects in the weeks ahead.
Haashim Pead (Lions)
Despite a crowded scrumhalf lineup in the Springbok setup, Pead’s rise signals a fresh option worth considering, especially with key fixtures like the Barbarians match and the upcoming Nations Championship Tests approaching. Integrating him sooner could mirror the breakthrough impact Herschel Jantjies had in 2019.
As the Lions fight to maintain their fifth-place standing and secure a knockout position, Pead’s partnership with established Bok scrumhalf Morné van den Berg adds valuable depth and versatility to the squad.
Cheswill Jooste (Bulls)
Originally slated for the Junior Springboks in the Under-20 Rugby Championship, Jooste’s trajectory shifted as he now tours Europe with the Bulls, who are battling to remain competitive in the URC. This phase demands the franchise’s full confidence in him, moving beyond a mere developmental role.
Jooste’s explosive pace and ability to exploit gaps have already shone through, but consistent game time is essential. Frequent rotation risks stalling his development and diminishing his chances of breaking into the senior national team ahead of the international calendar.
JD Schickerling (Stormers)
With RG Snyman sidelined due to injury, the search for a reliable lock has intensified. Schickerling has quietly delivered steady performances for the Stormers, often flying under the radar this season.
His lineout skills and physicality closely resemble Snyman’s attributes, making him a strong contender for the role. With several crucial matches remaining, including potential playoff games, Schickerling has ample opportunity to solidify his case for Springbok selection through consistent effort and impact.
Francke Horn (Lions)
Although Jasper Wiese currently anchors the Springbok No. 8 position, depth in this role remains limited. Horn has raised his performance levels, showcasing leadership qualities and a dynamic playing style that extends beyond the traditional eighthman role.
His aggressive ball-carrying, spatial awareness, and ability to inject momentum into the Lions’ attack distinguish him. While his attacking flair might contrast with the more conventional expectations of the position, sustained strong performances during this critical URC phase could influence selectors.
Jurenzo Julius (Sharks)
Julius is not yet the preferred outside-centre for the Sharks, but with the team striving to break into the Top 8, opportunities may arise for him to impress ahead of the June internationals.
Currently the only South African franchise outside playoff contention, the Sharks’ campaign could open doors through injuries or shifts in form. Julius has demonstrated readiness to step up when called upon and is poised to capitalize on any chance to catch the eye of the Springbok selectors.
