Fatal Residential Fire Claims Life in Kensington
In the early hours of Friday, a tragic fire at a residential property in Kensington resulted in one fatality, according to the City’s Fire and Rescue Service.
Emergency Response and Discovery
Gerard Langenhoven, spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service, reported that emergency teams were dispatched following a call received at 4:53 a.m. Residents alerted authorities to a fire engulfing a formal home located at 98 Bunny Street.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service was notified at 4:53 a.m. on Friday about a fire at a formal residence on Bunny Street,” Langenhoven explained.
Firefighters promptly arrived and commenced fire suppression efforts. During the operation, they found a deceased individual inside the building.
“While extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered a body, prompting immediate notification of the South African Police Service (SAPS),” Langenhoven added.
Ongoing Investigation and Context
Following the discovery, the scene was transferred to SAPS for a thorough investigation. At this time, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.
This incident occurs amid a notable surge in fire outbreaks throughout Cape Town. Earlier this year, officials cautioned residents about an escalation in both residential and wildland fires, marking one of the most severe fire seasons in recent memory.
Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding this fatal fire.
