John Steenhuisen reflects on his departure from the Democratic Alliance leadership with mixed emotions.

“For the first time, I am not contesting for leadership, but I take comfort in leaving behind a unified party,” he remarked.

He emphasized that the upcoming DA federal congress marks a pivotal leadership transition, ushering in a younger generation.

“The majority of the new leadership team is in their early 40s, positioning them well to connect with both the party and the broader electorate,” Steenhuisen explained.

His exit comes amid controversies surrounding alleged personal financial improprieties and the emergence of internal factions within the DA.

“I believe it’s preferable to lead the entire party rather than just a segment of it,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Steenhuisen expressed hope that the congress will clarify the DA’s strategic role within the government of national unity (GNU).
