Orlando Pirates 5 (Mofokeng 16’, 61’, Appollis 30’, 92’, Jiyane OG)
Relebohile Mofokeng was the standout performer as Orlando Pirates secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, keeping their Betway Premiership title ambitions alive.
Following a hat-trick in his last appearance for his previous club, the 21-year-old midfielder continued his impressive run by netting twice, propelling the Buccaneers to 54 points-just two points shy of league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who narrowly defeated Durban City in KwaZulu-Natal amid a fiercely competitive title chase.
From the outset, Pirates dominated the match, with Mofokeng setting the pace early on.
After hitting the post within the first minute, he opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a moment of brilliance.
Receiving the ball near the penalty area, the Bafana Bafana playmaker deftly maneuvered before curling a magnificent shot into the top corner, marking his fourth goal in just two games.
Maintaining their momentum, Pirates doubled their lead in the 30th minute thanks to Oswin Appollis, who also went on to score twice during the match.
A swift free-kick caught Golden Arrows off guard, leaving Appollis unmarked at distance.
He capitalized instantly, firing a precise low shot into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.
Golden Arrows’ woes worsened before halftime when their captain, Ayanda Jiyane, inadvertently scored an own goal under pressure inside the box, sealing a disastrous first half for the visitors.
With a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break, Pirates controlled the tempo and continued to dominate after the interval.
Mofokeng once again took center stage in the second half, completing his brace with a fourth goal that highlighted his rising influence.
Displaying exceptional skill, he weaved through several defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner-a finish that showcased both poise and finesse.
This commanding display not only secured vital points but also emphasized Pirates’ offensive strength as the title race heats up.
For Golden Arrows, it was a night to forget, as they struggled to contain Pirates’ fluid attacking style and were punished repeatedly for defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates sent a clear message: with Mofokeng spearheading their attack, they remain serious contenders for the championship.
