Fifa Imposes Transfer Embargo on Chippa United Amid Financial Dispute
Chippa United Faces Player Registration Ban Over Unpaid Dues
Chippa United has been hit with a transfer embargo by Fifa, preventing the club from registering new players until it settles outstanding payments to former head coach Luc Eymael. Despite this setback, current head coach Vusi Vilakazi remains confident that the squad at his disposal is sufficient to navigate the ongoing season.
Background of the Transfer Ban and Financial Obligations
Last week, Fifa officially notified the Eastern Cape-based club that it is barred from signing any new players for the upcoming season unless it clears the overdue remuneration owed to Belgian coach Luc Eymael. Previously, Fifa had granted Chippa a 45-day grace period to pay the R250,000 settlement demanded by Eymael.
Failure to comply has resulted in a ban that will last for three consecutive transfer windows or until the debt is fully paid. The next opportunity for player registration opens in August, which means Chippa could be restricted from strengthening their squad for an extended period.
Current Team Status and Coach’s Perspective
Chippa United currently finds itself precariously positioned just above the relegation zone in the Betway Premiership, battling to maintain its top-flight status. Nevertheless, Vilakazi expressed optimism about the existing roster, stating, “Nobody has spoken to me about that [the ban] … even the chair [Siviwe Mpengesi] hasn’t yet. But, ban or no ban, I’m happy with the players that I have now.”
He believes the experienced players already within the squad can sustain the club’s campaign this season and potentially into the next, should the transfer restrictions persist.
Details of the Dispute with Former Coach Luc Eymael
Luc Eymael departed Chippa United in October 2025 following a series of disappointing results and was succeeded by Vilakazi. Subsequently, Eymael lodged a formal complaint with Fifa, asserting that the club had not fulfilled its financial obligations to him.
In December 2025, Fifa acknowledged Eymael’s claim and instructed Chippa to settle the outstanding amount within 45 days. However, according to a letter dated April 6 from Eymael’s legal counsel, Lorenzo Gerber, the club had yet to make the payment.
Following this, Fifa’s head of discipline, Americo Espallargus, issued the transfer ban on April 8, with the South African Football Association (Safa) also being notified to enforce the embargo at the national level.
Official Statements and Ongoing Negotiations
Fifa’s correspondence highlighted that Chippa United had not complied with its financial duties towards Eymael, resulting in the imposed ban on registering new players both domestically and internationally. The embargo will remain effective until the debt is cleared or for a maximum of three consecutive registration periods.
In response, Chippa United released a statement on Monday emphasizing that the matter is an ongoing administrative issue being handled amicably between the club and Eymael. The club confirmed the outstanding amount is approximately R200,000 and expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved before the next transfer window in August.
“This process is being managed accordingly and will be settled as we plan for the following season,” the club added.
Context: Transfer Bans in the PSL and Chippa’s History
Chippa United is not alone in facing transfer restrictions; other Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams such as Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy have also been sanctioned for various reasons. This is not the first time Chippa has encountered a Fifa-imposed transfer ban. In 2024, the club was temporarily barred from registering new players following a dispute with defender Abdi Banda, though that ban was eventually lifted.
Upcoming Fixtures and Season Outlook
With five league matches remaining, Chippa United’s next challenge is against AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on April 25. The club’s ability to maintain its Premiership status will depend heavily on the current squad’s performance amid the transfer restrictions.
