Masechaba Mposwa’s departure leaves Newzroom Afrika “taken aback” as the station addresses the situation
Newzroom Afrika has publicly responded to the sudden resignation of veteran journalist Masechaba Mposwa, who recently announced her immediate exit from her role as the Weekend Report anchor.
On Thursday, Mposwa took to her official social media channels to confirm her decision to leave the newsroom without prior notice, catching many viewers and colleagues off guard.
The unexpected nature of her announcement quickly ignited widespread discussion among the audience, with numerous questions raised about the reasons behind her swift departure.
In a statement released the following day, Newzroom Afrika acknowledged the surprise caused by Mposwa’s exit, emphasizing that the organization had not anticipated this development.
“Typically, Newzroom Afrika refrains from commenting on staff changes; however, we were genuinely surprised by the sudden announcement, especially since contract renewal talks with Masechaba had not yet commenced,” the broadcaster explained.
The network clarified that no formal negotiations regarding her contract extension were underway at the time, which contributed to the internal shock surrounding her decision.
Despite the unforeseen circumstances, Newzroom Afrika expressed its gratitude for Mposwa’s contributions and extended best wishes for her future pursuits.
“We remain appreciative of her work and wish her success moving forward. Updates about any upcoming changes to our programming will be shared in due course,” the statement added.
Mposwa’s departure has sparked speculation about the Weekend Report’s continuity, with the station confirming that a permanent successor has not yet been appointed.
In the meantime, Nompumelelo Ngubeni has temporarily taken over anchoring duties for the weekend broadcasts on April 4 and 5, ensuring the program’s continuity.
Newzroom Afrika reassured its audience that further announcements regarding the weekend schedule and presenter lineup will be communicated as the station finalizes its plans.
