Fikile Mbalula Calls for Renewed Leadership to Restore ANC’s Credibility

During the Solomon Mahlangu memorial lecture held at Mamelodi West cemetery in Tshwane, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula emphasized the urgent need for party members to embody integrity and accountability to rebuild the public’s confidence in the African National Congress.

Reclaiming the ANC’s Role as a Trusted Representative

Mbalula stressed that the ANC must reestablish itself as a dependable institution for South Africans. “The ANC is the people’s vehicle, and trust in it hinges on leaders who genuinely uphold their commitments rather than merely reciting slogans,” he remarked. He urged members to demonstrate through their actions that the party remains a reliable avenue for citizens to voice concerns and seek solutions.

Addressing the Fallout from the 2024 Elections

The 2024 general elections marked a significant shift, with the ANC losing its majority amid growing public frustration over persistent issues such as high unemployment rates, deteriorating infrastructure, and ongoing corruption scandals. According to recent data from Statistics South Africa, unemployment remains above 30%, exacerbating dissatisfaction with government performance.

Despite these setbacks, Mbalula reminded supporters of the ANC’s historic achievements and contributions to South Africa’s liberation and development. He encouraged members to focus on tangible progress ahead of the 2026 local government elections, stating, “When critics predict the demise of the ANC, our response must be demonstrated through our deeds. The end of the ANC is not imminent; it will not be brought about by external forces.”

Unity as a Pillar for the ANC’s Future

Drawing inspiration from the late Oliver Tambo’s cautionary words, “No one will kill the ANC; the ANC will kill itself,” Mbalula highlighted the dangers of internal discord. He called for the eradication of factionalism, trivial disputes, and disunity within the party ranks. “Discipline is essential. We must focus on our collective mission without confusing our platforms or priorities,” he asserted.

Furthermore, Mbalula discouraged public airing of internal conflicts, advocating instead for constructive dialogue within party structures. “Challenges are inevitable, but they must be addressed through meetings and direct communication with ANC leadership to find solutions as a united front,” he advised.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening the ANC’s Connection with Communities

As the ANC prepares for the upcoming local elections, Mbalula’s message underscores the importance of leadership that is both accountable and approachable. By fostering transparency and responsiveness, the party aims to restore its standing among voters who have grown increasingly skeptical. Recent surveys indicate a gradual decline in trust towards political institutions, making this call for renewed commitment particularly timely.

In this context, the ANC’s ability to deliver on service promises and maintain internal cohesion will be critical factors determining its political future.
